With a broad knowledge of media-related issues, Dr. Phillips specializes in new media and technology with a profound interest in contemporary music and popular culture. Prior to becoming the chairperson of the Department of Journalism and New Media Studies at St. Joseph’s University, New York, he taught at Fordham University, CUNY College of Staten Island, The New School, Parsons School of Design, Marymount Manhattan College and New York University. Dr. Phillips currently teaches classes on journalism and the theory and culture of new media.
Dr. Phillips has presented at conferences in the northeast, as well as England. He is the co-author of The Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal (Greenwood Press, 2009). He also wrote a chapter for R&B—Rhythm and Business: The Political Economy of Black Music (Akashic Books, 2002) and an article on “The Role of TV Violence” for Parenting Magazine.
