SJC Awarded $10K Grant from Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – February 10, 2016 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation to establish the College’s first Institute for Ethics and Global Social Justice. The purpose of the Institute is to expand and improve opportunities for SJC students to forge their character within an institution dedicated to values and integrity, and to infuse ethics into our surrounding communities, and beyond.

“We are grateful for this funding from the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation that will help us start our new Institute for Ethics and Global Social Justice,” said SJC President Jack P. Calareso, Ph.D. “This funding will allow the Institute to begin expanding opportunities for SJC students to forge their character, and to infuse ethics into our surrounding communities, and beyond. We are also grateful to the Foundation for this chance to build a meaningful partnership.”

Given the broad range of pivotal community issues on Long Island, SJC founded a number of institutes devoted to specific areas that are essential to community building. The Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Management, the Institute for Attainable Homes, the Institute for Community Health and Wellness, the Institute for Religion in Community Life and the Center for Community Solutions are vibrant examples of how much can be accomplished when academe and community come together in search of solutions. 

“As SJC celebrates its Centennial, it is important to note that educating for character and integrity have always resided at the core of the College,” said Christopher Frost, Ph.D., senior vice president and vice president for academic affairs at SJC. “As we enter our next 100 years, the founding of this Institute embodies our pledge to continue challenging students to strive for ethical excellence, and to find new ways to extend that commitment into our homes, neighborhoods and communities.” 

The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation was founded in 1995 and supports arts and cultural organizations through grants to catalyze collective action, promote equality, contribute to advocacy and policy change and develop capacity for greater civic engagement. The Foundation also supports organizations outside of the arts whose programs seek to engage communities through cultural activities.
