Acclaimed Author Colson Whitehead Returns to SJC

April 28, 2014 BK

BROOKLYN, N.Y. April 29, 2014 St. Josephs College (SJC) is pleased to announce that MacArthur Fellow Colson Whitehead will launch his new book, The Noble Hustle: Poker, Beef Jerky, and Death in conversation with Nathan Englander as part of the Colleges Brooklyn Voices lecture series. This talk, presented in partnership with Greenlight Bookstore and the Brooklyn Rail, is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium, located on the College's Brooklyn Campus.

In 2011, Grantland magazine sent award-winning novelist Colson Whitehead, author of The Intuitionist, Sag Harbor and Zone One, to brave the harrowing gauntlet of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. With just six weeks to train, Whitehead plunged into the gritty subculture of high-stakes Texas Holdem. Whiteheads account of his experience encompasses joy and heartbreak, grizzled cowboys from the games golden age, teenage hotshots weaned on internet gambling and the overlooked problem of coordinating Atlantic City bus schedules with your kids drop-off and pick-up at school. The Noble Hustle is a raucously funny social satire whose main target is the author himself. Whitehead will talk cards, beef jerky and literature with author, friend and fellow poker enthusiast Nathan Englander, author of For the Relief of Unbearable Urges and What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank, at the book launch event, which will be followed by a signing.

"We are delighted to welcome our inaugural Brooklyn Voices speaker back to SJC for the launch of his latest work, said SJCs Brooklyn Campus Executive Dean Dr. Richard Greenwald. "Im looking forward to hearing of his experiences in Vegas firsthand, and to see where his foray into non-fiction takes him as a writer.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Michael Banach, director of public affairs at 718.940.5584 or [email protected].
