BROOKLYN and PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – November 3, 2021 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that SJC President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., has been named to the PoliticsNY Power Players in Education List, and has also been selected as a Schneps Media A-List honoree; he will serve as keynote speaker at the annual Schneps event on Thursday, November 4.
PoliticsNY’s Power Players in Education recognizes public officials, policymakers, superintendents and scholars, advocates and activists, and labor, business and nonprofit leaders who work to ensure New York’s students get the very best education.
The A-List honors extraordinary men across all industries from New York City and Long Island. The event provides an opportunity for sharing of thoughts on building stronger businesses and communities through the connection of like-minded individuals.
“The last months have been a huge challenge to all of us, no matter our fields,” said President Boomgaarden. “To be named among so many accomplished leaders who have persevered and overcome these challenges is indeed a great honor for me, and for St. Joseph's College.”
Dr. Boomgaarden began his tenure at SJC in July 2017. Since arriving at the College, he has launched a new strategic plan, increased the College’s endowment by more than 120 percent and saw record high enrollments on all three campuses — SJC Brooklyn, SJC Long Island and SJC Online. Under his leadership, the College is adding new academic programs, improving its campuses and breaking ground on a multi-million dollar student center on the Patchogue campus.
Dr. Boomgaarden serves on the board of trustees for the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities; board of directors for Long Island Association; is Board Chair of the Association of Colleges of Sisters of St. Joseph; and is chair of the Lower Hudson Valley Consortium of Catholic Colleges and Universities. He has been named one of the most influential Brooklynites by “Brooklyn Power 100” for two consecutive years.
Prior to joining SJC, Dr. Boomgaarden served as the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. He also served as dean of the College of Music and Fine Arts and David P. Swanzy Distinguished Professor of Music at Loyola University New Orleans. Dr. Boomgaarden is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Harvard University’s Institute for Management and Leadership in Education, and also studied at the University of Vienna, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.
