April 07, 2016 BK LI

BROOKLYN AND PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – April 7, 2016 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce the return of its Presidential Lecture series with Michelle D. Bernard, political and policy analyst, television commentator, author, and president and CEO of the Bernard Center for Women, Politics and Public Policy. Bernard will present her lecture, “More Than Single-Issue Voters: How Today’s American Women are Changing the Face of Feminism,” at SJC Long Island on Wednesday, May 11 at 7 p.m. and at SJC Brooklyn on Thursday, May 12 at 1 p.m.

An attorney by training, Bernard’s focus of concentration is on domestic and foreign policy matters, particularly matters of racial, social and gender justice and the advancement of democracy, economic liberty and the human rights of women and ethnic and religious minorities globally.

Bernard has been featured in several publications, has spoken before numerous organizations, and as the former president and CEO of the Independent Women’s Forum (IWF), founded IWF’s Iraqi Women’s Democracy Initiative, which assisted in the development and implementation of training programs built on the pillars of democracy, women’s rights and religious freedom, political activism in a democracy, issues of governance, free markets and non-governmental organizations. Prior to founding the Bernard Center for Women, Politics and Public Policy and joining IWF, Bernard was a partner at the District of Columbia’s Patton Boggs, LLP. She holds a B.A. in Philosophy and Political Science from Howard University and a Juris Doctor degree from The Georgetown University Law Center.

SJC’s Presidential Lecture Series was established to illustrate the liberal arts ideals of free and open inquiry, and to support the College's mission: Esse non videri: “To be, not to seem.” For this series, SJC hosts a distinguished member of public life with experience, knowledge and perspectives that challenge the College as an academic community and the community at large as citizens in the 21st century.

These lectures are free and open to the public. To RSVP to SJC Brooklyn's lecture, click here. For SJC Long Island, click here. For more information, contact Vicki Irwin at 631.687.2645 or [email protected].
