PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – March 11, 2015 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that former United States Congressman Tim Bishop has accepted the position of Distinguished Professor of Civic Engagement and Public Service on the College’s Long Island Campus, effective March 2015.
In this new role, Bishop’s duties will include the leadership of SJC’s newly envisioned Center for Community Solutions, the purpose of which is to address issues of access to education, public health and wellness, housing, and hospitality and livability across Long Island. In addition, he will organize and lead annual conferences at the College, guest lecture in select classes, offer talks and mentor SJC students. As a Distinguished Professor, Bishop will intentionally enhance the regional and national visibility of SJC, while working to build community as the College celebrates its centennial.
“I am excited to serve in this new capacity at St. Joseph’s College,” said Bishop. “My primary goal is to support the college community as we move forward into the next chapter and celebrate the College’s centennial. I have been a supporter of St. Joseph’s for many years and I look forward to working with students, sharing my ideas and enhancing our partnership.”
Prior to serving in the United States Congress from 2003-2015, Bishop was an administrator at Southampton College of LIU for 29 years, the last 16 of which he spent as Provost of the Campus. As a representative for New York’s 1st congressional district, Bishop served most of central and eastern Suffolk County, including most of Smithtown and the towns of Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southold, Southampton, East Hampton and Shelter Island. Among his legislative accomplishments, Bishop was one of four authors in the Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2013 (H.R. 3080), and wrote major sections of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 (H.R. 2669) and the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009 (H.R. 3221).
“I am pleased to welcome the Honorable Tim Bishop as the College's first distinguished professor at St. Joseph’s College," said SJC President Jack P. Calareso, Ph.D. “Tim’s knowledge, experience and eagerness to assist us in our new initiatives, as well as his distinguished history in higher education, make him a valuable resource to the College community and all of Long Island. Tim has been a great friend of the College and I know that he will succeed in this new role.”
Bishop resides in Southampton, New York with his wife, Kathy. The couple has two daughters, Molly and Meghan, and a grandson, Nathan.
