BROOKLYN AND PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – August 28, 2018 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is proud to partner with The Robert D.L.Gardiner Foundation for the second year in a row to promote the history of New York City and New York State. Through a generous $31,000 grant from The Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation, SJC will host the “Irish American Heritage in New York City and State” speaker series in March 2019.
The series will take place at both SJC Long Island and SJC Brooklyn and will feature Michael Doorley, Ph.D., Irish American historian and visiting scholar, as well as a digital exhibit based on the research and documentation of Dr. Doorley’s work.
Much of Dr. Doorley’s work focuses on the life of Daniel Cohalan, a prominent and influential public figure in New York Irish politics. Dr. Doorley’s work weaves in the urban and ethnic context of the early 20th century, covering many of the historical events that were unfolding as St. Joseph’s College first opened its doors. Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1916, the College was established to address the needs of underserved Catholic, predominantly Irish, young women. Grant funding will be used in part to pay for four events which will be open to the public. Events are expected to take place in March 2019.
