PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – November 16, 2015 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that SJC Long Island mathematics and computer science major Samantha Miller ’16, was recently selected to present a paper and her poster at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Undergraduate Research Conference from November 6 – 8 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Miller will present her research involving the new atom accelerator known as the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS II) that she conducted last summer at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in Upton, New York. In addition, Miller has been awarded Upsilon Pi Epsilon’s (UPE) 2015 Dan Drew Award for her academic record and extra-curricular activities. The scholarship is given in honor of the UPE Honor Society’s founder, Dr. Dan Drew.

“Samantha Miller is the recipient of one of the most prestigious scholarships awarded by UPE,” said S. Jane Fritz, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science at SJC Long Island. “Samantha is definitely an outstanding senior at SJC. She spent the summer doing research and is president of the Computer Club and SJC’s UPE chapter. We are very proud of her.”

Miller’s research paper, “Software Development for Correlating Multi-Wavelength Images,” details the user interface software that she developed to allow scientists to better align their microscopic samples to within the beam of the NSLS II. She is continuing to work at BNL, extending her work to include x-ray samples.
