SJC Student Awarded International Honor Society Scholarship

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – September 24, 2018 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that SJC Long Island mathematics and computer science major Danielle Fieseler ’19 was recently awarded a scholarship from Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), the international honor society for the computing and information disciplines. 

“The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is extremely proud of Danielle Fieseler being awarded the UPE Scholarship,” said Victoria Hong, chairperson, assistant professor and director of SJC’s M.S. in Forensic Computing. “Danielle exemplifies the best in a St. Joseph's College student. She is intelligent, hardworking and a kind and caring person. The scholarship is a well-deserved acknowledgement of her outstanding achievements.”

Fieseler was nominated for the scholarship by S. Jane Fritz, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science. She is interested in the field of cybersecurity and has interned with Goddard Space Flight Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory and the John C. Stennis Space Center.

“I was completely shocked when I heard I would receive the scholarship,” said Fieseler. “All of the other individuals who received the scholarship were from large schools. I was the only one from a small school and it made me feel very proud.”

The primary judging categories for are the applicant’s academic records, the tone of the faculty member’s recommendation and the applicant’s department-related activities.  

UPE’s mission is to recognize academic excellence in the computing and information disciplines;  enable outstanding students to obtain recognition of superior educational achievement that emphasizes the computing and information disciplines, as well as liberal arts, sciences, and other professional and interdisciplinary education in the context of individual and societal responsibilities; and assist in maximizing the personal and professional growth of students in UPE by financially supporting scholarships and other creative endeavors.
