SJC Students Participate in Course at Brookhaven National Lab

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. JANUARY 21, 2014 St. Josephs College (SJC) is pleased to announce that two undergraduate students from its Long Island Campus recently participated in an elite mini-course at Brookhaven National Lab located in Upton, N.Y.

Daniel Cisek and Thomas Smith were two of 40 students from across the country chosen to participate in a mini-course that met for one week and covered topics such as nuclear medicine and high energy physics. In addition, the students learned about a variety of research being done at the Lab and participated in a series of lectures, tours and interviews with scientists. At the end of the course, the students each received a certificate from the Lab. The program is part of a selection process for a highly competitive summer research internship.

"We are fortunate to have such a world-class research facility in our backyard, said S. Jane Fritz, professor of mathematics and computer science at SJC. "I am grateful that the Brookhaven Labs focus is on protecting the environment, improving the quality of life and encouraging the next generation of scientists to be people-centered.

Cisek 15, a mathematics major and East Islip resident, plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Mathematics and a career in research. Ciseks ultimate goal is to study arctic geology and work in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica.

Smith 15, a double major in mathematics and computer science and West Babylon resident, plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics. Smith would like to pursue a career in research at a national lab or in the aeronautics industry.
