ST. JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY, NEW YORK TO WELCOME AUTHOR MATTHEW MORRIS

February 13, 2025 BK

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – February 13, 2025 – St. Joseph’s University, New York (SJNY), in partnership with Greenlight Bookstore, will host Matthew R. Morris, educator, anti-racism advocate and Toronto-based writer, to present Black Boys Like Me: Confrontations with Race, Identity, and Belonging on Wednesday, February 19 at 12:40 p.m. in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium.

Morris is an elementary school teacher in Toronto, Canada. In addition to teaching, his work and public speaking on the deconstruction of Black masculinity, hip-hop culture and schooling has taken Morris across North America to consult on and learn about the current challenges facing students and educators.

His book features eight essays related to identity and perception. After graduating high school, Morris spent four years in the U.S. on multiple football scholarships and, having spent that time in the States experiencing “the Mecca of hip hop and Black culture,” returned home with a newfound perspective. Morris explores the tension between his consumption of Black culture as a child, his teenage performances of the ideas and values of the culture that often betrayed his identity, and the ways society and the people guiding him—his parents, coaches and teachers—received those performances.

This event is free and open to the public. Morris’ book will be available for purchase.
