Celebrating Intellectual Values: A Presidential Series

Patchogue, N.Y. – March 17, 2015 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to present “Celebrating Intellectual Values: A Presidential Series” on the Long Island Campus for the spring semester.

The schedule of events includes:

• Friday, March 27, 10 a.m. - noon – “Loving vs. Punitive Gods: Empathetic Reactions to Others” by Nina Franza ’14 and Kelly Laliberty ’14
• Monday, April 13, 12:30 p.m. – The Dr. Reza and Georgianna Clifford Khatib Chair in Comparative Religion Seventh Annual Lecture: “Thomas Merton — Spiritual Explorer” by Robert Ellsberg
• Thursday, April 16, 12:40 p.m. – “Does Religion Cause Violence? An Interdisciplinary Dialogue”
• Saturday, April 25, 9:30 a.m. – Undergraduate Research Symposium
• Friday, May 1, 1 p.m. – “Terror Management Theory: Human Dilemmas and the Quest for Meaning” featuring Dr. Sheldon Solomon

“One of the real pleasures of serving as dean is that I get to hear firsthand stories of transformation recounted by our students,” said Christopher Frost, Ph.D., executive dean on the Long Island Campus of SJC. “The excitement generated by an especially compelling lecture or a book that opens up new worlds, the experience of presenting one’s own research at our Student Research Symposium, the excitement of having scholars and authors engage them in dialogue, these stories and experiences convey one of the highest aspirations that we hold as a college community: intellectual life and the life of the mind. By way of this series of events, we affirm and own these ideals, as we welcome President Calareso to our community.”
