Film Discussion Series Continues with Pawel Pawlikowski’s Ida

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. June 2, 2014 St. Josephs College (SJC) faculty member Thomas Petriano, Ph.D., will host a discussion on the Pawel Pawlikowski film Ida on Wednesday, June 4 at 7:30 at the Plaza Cinema & Media Arts Center (MAC) located in downtown Patchogue, as part of its ongoing Film Discussion Series.

An intimate and moving drama by acclaimed writer and director Pawel Pawlikowski, Ida is about a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland who, on the verge of taking her vows, makes a shocking discovery about her past. Pawlikowski is best known for his 2000 film Last Resort, which he wrote and directed, as well as the 2004 British drama My Summer Love. Both films received awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).

"Ida is a cinematic triumph, said Dr. Petriano, professor and chair of religious studies at SJC. "Using black and white cinematography evocative of the films of Ingmar Bergman, Robert Bresson and Theodore Dreyerand a sound track that ranges from Mozart to Coltranethis film tells a gripping story of a search for identity in post-war Poland. Ida raises questions of guilt, faith and the choices that shape our lives.

Plaza MAC has included SJC faculty members in its Film Discussion Series since 2013. Tickets for Ida and the film discussion are $11 for the general public, $8 for students with a valid ID and $7 for members. For more information, visit www.plazamac.org.
