Is God’s Charity Broad Enough for Bears?

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – February 17, 2015 – The Institute for the Study of Religion in Community Life at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce the lecture, “Is God’s Charity Broad Enough for Bears?,” an all-day event on Friday, February 27 in the McGann Conference Center on the Long Island Campus.

“Is God’s Charity Broad Enough for Bears?” will be presented by S. Elizabeth A. Johnson, C.S.J., Ph.D., distinguished professor of theology at Fordham University in New York. The event will begin with a continental breakfast at 9:30 a.m. and the presentation from Johnson at 10 a.m. Following at 11 a.m., there will be a Q&A session by respondents S. Suzanne Franck, C.S.J., J.D., associate professor of religious studies at SJC, and Kirk Lawrence, Ph.D., assistant professor of sociology at SJC. Johnson will conclude with a secondary presentation and Q&A session after lunch.

Johnson was named Fordham’s Teacher of the Year in 1998 and Graduate Professor of the Year in 2011. She has published six books, with her most recent Ask the Beasts: Darwin and the God of Love (2014) focusing on the study of evolution and creation. Johnson has also penned more than 100 essays in scholarly journals, chapters in edited books, book reviews and articles in popular journals. She is a former president of both the Catholic Theological Society of America and the interfaith American Theological Society.
