PATCHOGUE, N.Y. OCTOBER 21, 2013 St. Josephs College is pleased to host a lecture and evening of music on "Faith, Hope and Hospitality on Thursday, October 24 in the McGann Conference Center located on the Colleges Long Island Campus in Patchogue, N.Y. The concert, by international musician Herv, will be performed at 6:30 p.m., followed by a public lecture by lay Dominican Dr. Jennie Weiss Block, OP at 7:30 p.m.
Haitian-American singer-song writer Herv was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. His diverse musical influences range from Haitian classics to American jazz and reggae, and his songs have been played on the radio in over 16 countries. Hervs unique, distinct, soulful voice and original thoughtful lyrics convey his positive sentiments toward his beloved homeland of Haiti. He has performed at various U.S. venues, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Art & Design in N.Y.C. and the University of Miami.
Dr. Jennie Weiss Block, OP is a Dominican laywoman and practical theologian who has served as chief advisor to Dr. Paul Farmer, founding director of the international non-profit organization Partners In Health (PIH), since 2009. Dr. Block also worked as his chief advisor as the U.N. Deputy Special Envoy to Haiti under former U.S. President Bill Clinton to assist in advancing the economic and social development of the impoverished Caribbean nation. Co-author and editor of several books with Dr. Farmer, she assisted him in the relief and recovery efforts following the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in 2010, where she helped create a center for displaced and orphaned children.
This event, which is being co-sponsored by The Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Management, The Institute for the Study of Religion in Community Life and the Office of Multicultural Student Life, is free and open to the public.
