Newsday Legend Bob Keeler To Receive SJC’s Non-Violence Award

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. APRIL 11, 2013 The Institute for the Study of Religion in Community Life at St. Josephs College (SJC) is pleased to announce that Bob Keeler, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and former editor and columnist at Newsday, will be the recipient of this years Esse Non Videri Non-Violence Award, which will be presented on Tuesday, April 16 at 12:40 p.m. in the McGann Conference Center located on the Colleges Long Island Campus.

Pulitzer Prize winner and advocate for the causes of peace and justice through the Catholic peace advocacy organization, Pax Christi, Newsday legend Bob Keeler recently retired from the paper after nearly 42 years, where he wrote about local politics, the environment, immigration and peace and justice issues. He is the author of Parish!: The Pulitzer Prize-Winning Story of One Vibrant Catholic Community, Newsday: A Candid History of the Respectable Tabloid and co-author of Days of Intense Emotion. Known as a "champion of social justice, Bob widely lectures on journalism and religion.

"Bob Keeler was chosen for the 2013 Esse Non Videri Non Violence Award, because he is a peacemaker, said Patrick Tracy, director of campus ministry for SJCs Long Island Campus. "He has been a compassionate voice throughout his journalistic career at Newsday, working for a better world and challenging us to make a more peaceful society.

Named after the Colleges motto, Esse Non Videri: "To be, not to seem, the Non-Violence Award is presented annually to individuals who exemplify compassion, social engagement and spirituality in the pursuit of social justice and peace. Recipients are chosen for their commitment to a nonviolent way of life and efforts toward bringing about peace, perhaps in an individual or personal situation, or to the wider community or world. Some of the past recipients include Nobel Peace Prize nominee Fr. John Dear; womens rights activist Homaira Mamoor; award-winning journalist Antoinette Bosco; peace activist Sr. Mary Fritz; Woodrow Wilson Fellow Janet Wallach; and Dead Man Walking author Sr. Helen Prejean.
