SJC Adds Math Education Degree

PATCHOGUE, NY AUGUST 18, 2010 St. Josephs College is pleased to announce the addition of a Master of Arts in Mathematics Education to its expanding graduate curriculum, which will be available to students on the Long Island Campus by the fall 2010 semester.

The 30-credit degree program will be available to students with a 3.0 GPA or higher who are already certified in adolescence education in mathematics, covering grades 7 through 12. Students currently enrolled as undergraduates at the College can take two classes during their senior year, which will count toward the masters degree; transfer students will need at least one semester on campus before matriculating into the degree program.

"We have been developing this program for two years and feel it provides a seamless transition from our current undergraduate education into a master's degree, said Elana Reiser, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics and program director for the M.A. in Mathematics Education. "The Master of Arts in Mathematics Education is designed to further mathematical knowledge, improve teaching skills and increase job prospects.

Classes included in the degree program will be scheduled in the evening to give those who work full time the flexibility to attend class part time. The degree requires two classes to be taken per semester, which includes the condensed summer semester. Courses for the degree will be at the 500- and 600-level with a focus on integrating technology, assessment and analysis to adhere to the standards set by the state and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Upon completion of the two-year program, coursework will fulfill requirements for professional certification in New York State and a written project will be mandatory for graduation.
