PATCHOGUE, NY AUGUST 31, 2010 St. Josephs College is pleased to announce the addition of a philosophy concentration to its child study curriculum, which will be available to new and current students on the Long Island Campus beginning fall 2010.
Child study majors at SJC are required to have an area of concentration of 30 credits chosen from one of 11 disciplines. Students who major in Child Study with a concentration in Philosophy will now be able to focus on philosophical analysis and learn how to teach philosophy to children. These future teachers will also focus on the way a child employs critical thinking, moral reasoning and social awareness in life situations, while remaining actively engaged in the learning process. Classes within the new concentration include: Philosophy of Children, Philosophy in the Pre-College Curriculum and Philosophy and Moral Education.
"This program represents an innovative way to incorporate creative and critical thinking into the pre-college curriculum, said Wendy Turgeon, associate professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy at St. Josephs College. "Philosophy offers teachers a way to help students become better thinkers and better citizens by engaging them in the examination of ideas that foster personal development as well as a thoughtful regard for others.
