SJC Faculty and Students Present at National Sociology Conference

PATCHOGUE AND BROOKLYN, N.Y. – March 9, 2015 – Faculty and students from St. Joseph’s College (SJC) recently collaborated and presented their research findings at the Eastern Sociological Society’s (ESS) Annual Meeting in New York City.

Rachel Schwartz, Ph.D., assistant professor of sociology, presented a paper, “That’s Just the Way It Is: Consent and Resistance in Frontline Service Work,” on a panel exploring employee consent and resistance within low-wage service work. Her findings are based on an ethnographic study of an urban supermarket.

Dr. Kirk Lawrence, Ph.D., assistant professor of sociology, co-presented “Relative Loss and Cohesion from Natural Disasters: Evidence from Hurricane Sandy” in a roundtable discussion with assistance from psychology students Arielle Lindstrom ’15 and Denzil Charles ’15. This presentation was the result of interdisciplinary research by Lawrence, Lindstrom, Charles and SJC faculty member Dominique Treboux, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Psychology and director of undergraduate research. Another student, sociology major Samantha Jacoby ’15 was a runner up in the undergraduate poster contest. Her topic was “Childhood Pet Attachment and Adult Closeness in Personal Relationships.”

Mirella Landriscina, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology, presented a roundtable discussion topic entitled, “More than Self-interest: An Exploratory Study of Real Estate Agents Working in a Gentrifying Community.” Professor Landriscina discussed her on-going research on housing values and gentrification in Brooklyn.

“The ESS’s Annual Meeting is an excellent opportunity for faculty and students to both present their research and be exposed to cutting-edge work of others in the discipline,” said Dr. Lawrence. “The conference also provides students with the ability to practice professional presentation skills and the chance to network with current and future professionals in the field.”
