SJC Faculty Member to Lead Film Discussion on All About My Mother

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. May 7, 2014 St. Josephs College (SJC) faculty member Peter Mascuch, Ph.D., will host a discussion on the film All About My Mother on Monday, May 12 at 7 p.m. The screening is part of SJCs Language of Film Seminar with the Plaza Cinema & Media Arts Center (MAC), and will take place at Shands Loft on the second floor of the BrickHouse Brewery located in downtown Patchogue. 

All About My Mother is a comedy-drama directed by Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2000. Almodovar has also directed Volver and The Skin I Live In. All About My Mother deals with the issues of HIV, transexualism, pregnancy, homosexuality and faith, while accompanying a mourning mother on her journey to reacquaint with her tragic past and the calamitous lives of those around her. 

"Pedro Almodovar has been Spain's greatest filmmaker for the last 30 years, and many would argue that he has also been the world's greatest filmmaker, said Dr. Peter Mascuch, associate professor of English and American studies and coordinator of the film media studies program at SJC. "All About My Mother gives us a chance to see him at his mid-career peak. This movie has the classic Almodovar signature elements: passionate acting, melodramatic plotting, lush visuals and sexual identity mashups that are, at turns, hilarious and heartbreaking. 

Plaza MAC has included SJC faculty members in its Film Discussion Series since the beginning of 2013. Discussions were led by Dr. Mascuch, SJC English and Writing Professor Thomas Grochowski and SJC Professor and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies Thomas Petriano.
