St. Joseph’s College (SJC) hosted the annual Suffolk County Golden Games, an athletic competition among senior citizens, on Friday, May 15 on the College’s Long Island Campus in Patchogue.
“The Golden Game Association believes this event is not just about winning medals,” said Linda Schoepfer, director of therapeutic recreation at Westhampton Care Center and Suffolk County Golden Games Association board member. “The games promote competitive energy, pride in doing one’s personal best, inspiration for others, confidence from achievement, fitness, friendship and fun.”
Founded in 1989 by Karen Nash, director of therapeutic recreation at Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, the annual event brings residents from 11 Suffolk County nursing home facilities together to compete in adaptive sporting events such as wheelchair relay, volleyball, basketball and distance throw. The contestants are able to compete with the help of family members, staff members from the nursing home facilities and volunteers from Sachem North High School and SJC.
