SJC Hosts IHTM Symposium: “Women in the Workforce”

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – AUGUST 18, 2014 – The Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Management (IHTM) at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) and the Long Island Hospitality and Leisure Association are pleased to host the symposium and networking breakfast, “Women in the Workforce” on Friday, September 12 from 8-10 a.m. in the McGann Conference Center located in O’Connor Hall on the College’s Long Island Campus in Patchogue, New York.

The program will include a networking breakfast, followed by a panel presentation and Q&A session by local female HTM experts. Panelists include Ellen Ruane, general manager of the Long Island Hilton of Melville; Cheryl Davidson, corporate director of Workforce Readiness at the North Shore-LIJ Health System; Kelly Boucher, education and events manager for the New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association; and Marjorie Monty, general manager of the Marriott Residence Inn of Plainview.

“With a greater emphasis placed on women in the workforce—which includes legislation relative to training and the gender wage gap—this particular IHTM networking breakfast will provide its audience with an overview of both opportunities and challenges from leading women within the industry,” said Dr. Gail Lamberta, L.I. Campus associate dean, co-chair for hospitality and tourism management and associate professor and chairperson of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at SJC. “To this end, and as part of its mission, the IHTM continues to play an important role in providing information and fostering discussions relative to current topics across the discipline of hospitality and tourism management.”

The all-female panel will be moderated by Mike Johnston, principal of the Concorde Hotel Group and president of the Long Island Hospitality and Leisure Association. Closing remarks will be given by John C. Tsunis, Esq., chair of the New York State Hospitality and Leisure Association and owner of Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook. Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R,C,WF,I-Huntington Station), will also provide a brief overview of the NYS Committee on Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development.

The mission of SJC’s Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Management is to provide a leading voice in the discussion of responsible hospitality as a critical component to running a successful enterprise.
