PATCHOGUE, N.Y. JULY 16, 2014 St. Josephs College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it recently hosted a two-day series of professional development workshops for local STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) educators who teach grades 7-12 in school districts across Long Island and in New York City. The workshops were funded through a grant program and sponsored by the New York State Education Department and College Board. This was the third year that SJC hosted the event.
"St. Joseph's College was happy to welcome back local secondary school teachers for these important workshops, said Debra Walling, director of admissions on SJCs Long Island Campus.
"There are many wonderful opportunities that exist for students in the STEM fields and we hope that the attendees were able to take some useful information with them.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are considered to be areas of national need. To encourage students to consider careers in these disciplines, the National Science Foundation funds scholarships for SJC students (undergraduate and graduate) majoring in mathematics, biology or chemistry who are committed to teach one of these subjects in a K-12 high-needs school anywhere in the United States.
