SJC Launches Freshman Year Experience Program On LI Campus

PATCHOGUE, NY AUGUST 22, 2012 St. Josephs College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will launch the Freshman Year Experience (FYE) program, an extended freshman orientation program that further facilitates students transition from high school to college while beginning the process of engaging freshmen in the life of the SJC College Community. Entering its fifth year on the Brooklyn Campus, the FYE program will begin its inaugural year on the Long Island Campus this fall.

"FYE and SJC 100 integrate experiences from inside and outside of the classroom while preparing students for the academic and co-curricular challenges of college life, said Marian Russo, director of student activities and co-curricular programs on the Long Island Campus. "By addressing the academic aspects of college life along with the social and emotional needs of college freshmen, we aim to establish the framework for student success.

Created and taught by faculty to complement SJC 100 courses, the FYE program will allow students to more easily explore the Colleges resources, support services and campus life, as well as participate in special activities designed to cultivate intellectual, social and civic development. As part of the FYE program, all freshmen will attend additional programs, including a weekly classroom session one day a week during Common Hour, and will participate in community service projects to help fulfill core curriculum requirements that align with the Colleges mission.

To further enrich the FYE program, all incoming freshmen have been given a copy of Beautiful Souls by Eyal Press, which they are required to read as part of the FYE experience. There will be a book discussion led by the author on October 11.
