SJC Long Island Announces Fall Artist in Residence

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – August 12, 2015 – The Council for the Arts at SJC Long Island will host a series of events this fall featuring the work of internationally renowned artist Mara Haseltine. Haseltine is SJC Long Island’s fall 2015 Artist in Residence.

The first event is an exhibition of micro portraits which capture microscopic views of Astrangia poculata, a coral colony from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The exhibition, titled “Rose Portrait Series: An Astrangia Poculata by Mara Haseltine,” will run from August 30 – September 30 in the Board Room Gallery of O’Connor Hall. 

In addition to the exhibition, Haseltine will host an artist reception on Monday, September 28 at 4:30 p.m. in the Board Room Gallery, as well as an artist talk on Tuesday, September 29 at 1 p.m. in the McGann Conference Center.

During her residency, Haseltine will offer workshops for SJC students in which they will look at objects under microscopes and make three-dimensional works in tape based on their findings.  The workshops are meant to illuminate the magic of the “invisible” world around us and allow students to interpret it through art.

Haseltine is an internationally renowned artist and environmentalist. Her art focuses on the ways human-generated pollution threatens the habitability of the biosphere. Haseltine’s unique work has centered around a wide range of experiences, from a voyage around the world to study the climate change and the ocean, to creating New York City’s first solar-powered oyster reef and sculptural renditions of microscopic life forms.
