PATCHOGUE, NY FEBRUARY 14, 2012 For the second consecutive year, St. Josephs College (SJC) has taken part in a national recycling competition known as RecycleMania. The friendly competition, which runs from February 6 through March 28, aims to help college and university recycling programs promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities.
This year, 31 SJC clubs participating in the competition have been tasked with designing its own recycling bin that will be will be rotated around campus to collect recyclable items such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans and glass bottles. After weekly weigh-ins, collected materials will be donated to charitable organizations that can benefit from the refund offered for the recyclable materials. At the end of the competition, SJCs Sustainability Committee, which is comprised of students, faculty and staff, will award prizes for the most creative recycling bin, most recycled material by weight and most consistent recording of weight.
The RecycleMania Competition was launched in 2001 as a challenge between two universities and has been growing ever since. Last year, 7.5 million students and staff from more than 630 colleges and universities participated, recovering more than 91 million pounds of recycled material.
"Everyone at St. Josephs is working hard to build an active recycling program on campus, said S. Suzanne Franck, director of the Academic Advisement Center and chair of the Sustainability Committee on SJCs Long Island Campus. "We are now in our second year of participation in the RecycleMania Competition and I am pleased to report that it has been successful so far. The amount of items we are collecting are steadily increasing and our students are having a great time while doing their part.
