SJC Participates in National Recycling Competition

PATCHOGUE, NY APRIL 5, 2011 St. Josephs College has taken part in a national recycling competition on both its Long Island and Brooklyn campuses known as RecycleMania, a seven-week friendly competition helping college and university recycling programs promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. The competition also helped launch a week-long inter-campus competition for St. Joseph's students.

With 14 clubs participating in the competition, each club has been tasked with designing its own recycling bin to collect recyclable items such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and glass bottles and jars. The campus bookstore will judge the recycling bins and donate a prize to the club with the most creative design. The St. Josephs College Sustainability Committee, comprised of students, faculty and staff, will award first and second place prizes to the clubs that collect the most items.

"St. Josephs College is working to build up an active recycling program on both of its campuses, said S. Suzanne Franck, associate academic dean and chair of the Sustainability Committee at St. Josephs College. "After learning about RecycleMania, we researched the competition online and decided to sign up for the first time. Im pleased to report that it has been successful so far and the amount of items we have collected are steadily increasing throughout the competition.

St. Josephs College plans to continue moving forward with its mission to lessen its impact on the environment. Future plans include increased recycling bins on both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses, using recycled paper goods on campus, installing double-sided printers in offices and computer labs, building an on-campus greenhouse and introducing an Environmental Studies minor in September 2011.
