SJC Receives $640K Grant from the REDC for Nursing Program

Brooklyn and Patchogue, N.Y. – December 17, 2014 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded more than $640,000 in grant funding from the Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) to expand the College’s Pre-Licensure Nursing Program, including the creation of state-of-the-art simulation and skills labs for prospective nursing students seeking to enter the health care industry.

“SJC is pleased to have received funding from the REDC for its new Pre-Licensure Nursing Program, which will increase the number of qualified, employable nurses in the region through education and training,” said SJC President Jack P. Calareso, Ph.D. “Through collaborative partnerships within the health care industry, SJC plans to spur job creation and economic growth while improving the overall health of communities on Long Island and in other areas of the New York region.”

With a shortage of nurses in the country, SJC will use the funds to expand its nursing program and prepare students for jobs as registered professional nurses. In addition, the College will focus on the connection between veteran students and the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields in an effort to create more opportunities for veterans and help combat the high rates of unemployment that they are facing.

Construction for the simulation and skills labs is slated to begin in 2015. The labs will allow students to gain practice before their first clinical experience in a hospital setting while developing their psychomotor and critical thinking skills and the clinical reasoning essential to nursing practice.

The REDC was established in 2011 by Governor Cuomo to develop long-term strategic plans for economic growth for each of the 10 regions of New York State. Over the past four years, the regional councils have awarded billions of dollars for job creation and community development.  These councils are public-private partnerships made up of local experts and stakeholders from business, academia, local government and non-governmental organizations.
