SJC Student Presents Research Paper at National Conference

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – November 25, 2014 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that Amanda Kahalehoe ’15, English major at SJC, recently presented her research paper titled, “Dames, Dudes and the Disturbed,” at the 25th Annual Mid-Atlantic Popular and American Culture Association (MAPACA) Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.

“I am so proud of Amanda—she is among our strongest English majors, with a firm grasp of literary theory,” said Judith Phagan, Ph.D., chairperson of SJC’s English department and associate professor on the Long Island Campus. “Amanda is not afraid to challenge well established literary critics.”

As part of a disabilities studies panel, Kahalehoe’s paper examined some of the gendered politics of disability and mental health in Ken Kesey’s, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Started in 1990, MAPACA’s annual conference has grown into one of the largest regional branches of the national Popular Culture and American Culture Association (PCA/ACA). Participants from around the world convene each year in various cities, where both new and experienced scholars find receptive audiences for their work.

MAPACA is a regional organization of the PCA/ACA. The academic organization is dedicated to critical analysis of various aspects of popular and American culture. MAPACA’s membership is open to all individuals who share an interest in the issues and events that affect cultural construction and production, often in ways that connect and collide across disciplinary boundaries.
