SJC STUDENT VETERAN RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD

August 04, 2021

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – August 4, 2021 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is proud to announce that SJC Long Island student Steven Galvao ’22, a United States Air Force Pararescueman, has been selected to receive the 2021 Student Veteran Leadership Award (SVLA) from G.I. Jobs®. The prestigious honor is presented to student veterans who are making a positive difference at their colleges and universities throughout the country.

Galvao, of Middle Island, is a biology major at SJC Long Island. He is one of only 25 student veterans in the United States who were chosen to receive the SVLA for their academics; working to bridge the cultural gap between student veterans and civilian students; and embodying the spirit of leadership, teamwork and camaraderie they learned in the military.

“It was my honor to nominate Steven and it is no surprise that he was chosen to receive this national recognition,” said Erin D’Eletto, director of SJC’s Office of Military and Veteran Services. “Steven's service and leadership are a blessing to the country, the community and St. Joseph’s College. I am so proud of his accomplishments and look forward to following his many future successes.”

Galvao is a current member and former treasurer of SJC’s nationally-sanctioned Student Veterans of America (SVA) Long Island Chapter and a member of Beta Beta Beta Biology Honor Society. Galvao also participates in the AirBorne Tri Team (ATT), a not-for-profit peer support and therapeutic recreational organization founded by an SJC student veteran, to assist transitioning veterans by providing physical health and wellness challenges. He plans to attend medical school after he graduates from SJC in Spring 2022.
