SJC Students Complete Summer Research Program at Brookhaven National Lab

Patchogue, N.Y. – September 23, 2014 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that four undergraduate students from its Long Island Campus recently participated in the Summer Undergraduate Laboratory Internship program at Brookhaven National Lab in Upton, New York. The SJC students were among an elite group of students from other institutions including, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York, Princeton, Cornell, Fordham, Hofstra and Stony Brook universities.  

Eric Ruhoy ’15, James Young ’15, Thomas Smith ’15 and Daniel Cisek ’15 are mathematics and computer science majors at SJC. Each of them was involved in a different area of research enabling them to solve real world problems, such as safeguarding nuclear materials, studying microscopic protein crystal structures and monitoring global climate change and weather prediction. Each of their research projects was presented at the Brookhaven National Lab Symposium in August 2014.

“The internships offered at Brookhaven are awarded on a nationally competitive basis, but our students are continually chosen for these exciting summer programs,” said S. Jane Fritz, professor of mathematics and computer science at SJC. “This year’s program allowed participants to be mentored by research scientists and gain valuable experience and knowledge. We are so proud of the work that SJC students can accomplish.”
