PATCHOGUE, N.Y. SEPTEMBER 3, 2013 St. Josephs College (SJC) is pleased to announce that 10 students, along with students and faculty from honors programs at Boise State and Texas State Universities, visited Oxford University in Oxford, England, and completed a rigorous three-week course of intellectual study this summer.
Led by Christopher Frost, Ph.D., academic dean of the Long Island Campus, the intensive three-week study-in-residence offered courses that were connected, integrated, experiential and team-taught.
"The study abroad program at Oxford was designed to deeply engage students and move them toward full, firsthand participation in learning, said Dr. Frost. "By way of the Oxford Experience, my hope was that students would embrace the role of a scholar through a profound understanding of the role. Now that we have returned, I am happy to report that our SJC students rose to the challenge and embraced this experience.
The courses examined the connections between science and religion and were designed to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. Students were encouraged to think critically about the topics of science and religion and to examine the gap between them. In addition, the students learned about English culture with trips to museums, Shakespeares Globe Theater and Stonehenge.
