SJC Students to Present at National Literature Conference

PATCHOGUE, NY FEBRUARY 15, 2013 The Department of English at St. Josephs College (SJC) is pleased to announce that five of its undergraduate students have been chosen to present their work at the ninth annual Susquehanna University Literature and Creative Writing Conference in Selinsgrove, PA, later this month.

Class of 2013 students, Brian Hicks, Lindsay Baillie, Samantha Miller, Brian Van Duyne and Nicole Mark, will join undergraduate students from around the country as they present and discuss a variety of literary themes and cultural issues. The conference, attended by students, aspiring writers, teachers and scholars, also features lectures, readings and spirited discussions on the intellectual and creative challenges shaping literacy study today.

"This is a very exciting time for the students and faculty at St. Josephs College, said Judith Phagan, Ph.D., chairperson and associate professor of English on the Long Island Campus. "Our English majors are producing world-class work and being recognized among some of the best students in the nation. We are all very proud of them.

This notable group of SJC English majors will present their works, "A Fire Within: The Flames in Morrison's Sula, "Sovereignty's Struggle: A Wife's Voice," "Accepting Responsibility: The Loss of Humanity in Passion Play and The York Play of Crucifixion," "The Whiteness of the Reader: Race Representation and Interpretation in Herman Melvilles Benito Cereno" and "The Perks of Being an English Teacher."
