PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – JUNE 30, 2014 – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) students and two faculty members from the Departments of Art and Philosophy traveled to Greece and Rome for 12 days during the spring semester as an extension of history, philosophy and art courses that the students attend on the College’s Long Island Campus.
The trip began in Rome, Italy where the students marveled at the architecture of the Coliseum, the Parthenon, the Forum, the Vatican and other areas of “The Eternal City.” From Rome, the group flew to Athens, Greece and discovered artifacts and architecture from the Archaic and Classical eras of Ancient Greece. They were able to visit the Acropolis with its accompanying museum that houses relics from the surrounding site. Their travels also took them up to Delphi and down around the Peloponnese, visiting Olympia, Nauplio, Mycenae and Corinth. The trip concluded with a cruise around the Saronic Gulf with stops along the way at three geographically different islands.
During the trip, students were taught by the official tour guides and SJC faculty members. Classes were held throughout the 12 days allowing students to explain their research on the art and architecture they had encountered with their classmates. Upon returning to the U.S., students were able to connect their findings while studying abroad to their spring semester class instruction and present the results in a final assignment.
“This trip was one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences of my life,” said Jenifer Steckler, a student on SJC’s Long Island Campus. “I saw and learned so much, and made some great friends and memories that will last a lifetime.”
