SJC to Host Discussion on Pope Benedict XVI’s Recent Encyclical

PATCHOGUE, NY MARCH 2, 2010 The Institute for the Study of Religion in Community Life at St. Josephs College will host a breakfast discussion in response to Pope Benedict XVIs most recent encyclical: "Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth) from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, March 12, 2010 in the McGann Conference Room on the Colleges Long Island Campus. Brother Benilde Montgomery, O.S.F. will lead a panel of six faculty members representing the business, philosophy, psychology, religious studies and social science departments.

Faculty participants will discuss the implications of the encyclical, which covers a wide range of contemporary issues, including globalization, the environment, the world-wide financial crisis and modern technology, on each of their disciplines. SJC professors Ralph Nofi, M.B.A., Wendy Turgeon, Ph.D., Paul Ginnetty, Ph.D., S. Suzanne Franck, C.S.J., Ph.D. and Mirella Landriscina, Ph.D. will serve as featured panelists who will present reflections on each of the six chapters of Pope Benedicts most recent encyclical and provide a wide-range of opinions and perspectives. 

"Pope Benedict's encyclical raises many challenging and thought-provoking ideas for people of faith, said Department of Religious Studies Chair Thomas Petriano. "The Institute has invited faculty with expertise in the various areas addressed by the encyclical to help us explore the ideas proposed in the context of the social teachings of the Church and the realities of a globalized world.
