SJC to Host Simulation Day

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – March 23, 2016 – The Individual Needs Network (INN) at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) will host its first Simulation Day event on Monday, April 4 at 1 p.m. in the McGann Conference Center and at 6 p.m. in the McGann Conference Center at SJC Long Island in Patchogue, New York.

“By hosting this event, we are hoping for guests to become more aware of the needs of others,” said Noelle Eichenlaub, chair of communications for INN at SJC Long Island. “Our goal is to open the door to conversations about different abilities, meet self-advocates from the SJC community and have a good time while doing so.”

The event aims to bring awareness and allow people to experience the world through the eyes of their peers with different abilities. Guests will be invited to experience simulation activities to get a sense of what people with diverse abilities experience on a daily basis. Many of the activities will be run by people who experience a specific condition, allowing for a unique opportunity to ask questions. INN’s goal is to break down the barrier that often surrounds people with different abilities, and provide an opportunity for discussion. A panel of students will guide discussions on how to be a better friend, coworker or family member to someone with different abilities.

ABOUT THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS NETWORK AT SJC
The Individual Needs Network is an interest group with a focus on advocacy, education and awareness. Our mission is to open minds toward meeting the physical, educational, social and emotional needs that supports inclusion for all. We want to educate people on universal design issues that continue to make St. Joseph's College an accessible campus. Showcasing the many resources available here at the College that support individual needs, as well as identifying new resources, is a focal point of the group. We aim to educate staff, faculty and students alike that each person has diverse, individual needs that need to be supported. We want to break the barriers that a stigma creates in order to support successful integration within the St. Joseph's College community. Our goal is to create an environment inclusive of the individual needs of all because no one should feel alone or left out.
