SJC to Host Talk on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

PATCHOGUE, NY APRIL 9, 2010 St. Josephs College is pleased to welcome guest speaker, Christopher Price, Ph.D., to lead the faculty discussion, "From Reflection to Scholarship: Starting on the Path to SoTL, on Monday, April 19, 2010. Dr. Price will discuss the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) during two sessions, 12:40-1:40 p.m. and 3:30-4:30 p.m., in the Shea Conference Room on the Colleges Long Island Campus.

SoTL is the research of student learning, which benefits educators by presenting all methods of inquiry and their results publicly. Dr. Prices discussion will address the process of becoming a critically reflective teacher and how reflection can enhance the learning experience for students. The discussion will be followed by a question and answer period.

"Over the last 20 years, the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) has gradually gained acceptance as a research option for most disciplines in higher education, said Dr. Renee White-Clark, professor in the graduate literacy and child study program at SJC. "It is advisable for faculty to first engage in critically reflective practice before making any attempt at a SoTL research program. This session will advise faculty on how to become more critically reflective teachers. It will also discuss how reflection about teaching can lead to improved student learning and possibly a career in SoTL.

Dr. Christopher Price is the director of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching and a professor in the Department of Political Science and International Studies at the State University of New York at Brockport. He also conducts workshops on discussion-based teaching, communicating effectively with students and using critical reflection to improve teaching and learning. He earned his Ph.D. in political science from the University at Albany, State University of New York in 2004.
