PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – March 30, 2015 – Students from the organization Students Taking an Active Role in Society (S.T.A.R.S.) and the Habitat for Humanity Club at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) are co-sponsoring a 5K run/walk, Running to Rebuild, to raise funds for community service efforts related to disaster relief. The Running to Rebuild 5K will take place at SJC’s Outdoor Field Complex in Patchogue on Saturday, April 25 at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m.
“Running to Rebuild will help raise funds for some of the important community service projects that SJC students are involved in,” said Patrick Tracy, director of campus ministry for SJC’s Long Island Campus. “We hope that many community members will join us for a morning of fun as we raise awareness for the incredible work of our students.”
The 5K race is open to the public. Pre-event registration is $20 per person and can be done online. Day-of registration begins at 8 a.m. and is $25 per person. The registration fee includes a t-shirt and breakfast. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers. Walkers and children are welcome.
Twice a year, SJC students dedicate their winter and spring breaks to embark on community service missions that help victims of natural disasters. This year’s spring break trip is to Jersey Shore, New Jersey to help rebuild homes that have remaining damage from Superstorm Sandy. Previous trips have also included helping to build a day care center and playground in Nicaragua, building homes in Georgetown, South Carolina and rebuilding homes that were destroyed by tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri.
SJC’s Outdoor Field Complex is located one mile east of the Long Island Campus at 246 Sunrise Highway, South Service Road in Patchogue. For more information, contact Pat Tracy at 631.687.1466 or visit starsli.wix.com/sjc5k.
