We realize that your spring break is not what you imagined it would be, but we hope that you are, nonetheless, finding some time to rejuvenate, despite our current circumstances. For the purposes of this communication, I wanted to highlight a few important things you will need to know about upcoming advisement, registration and our move to remote classrooms.
Advisement and Registration
Class registration schedules will be moved back by one week as we all adjust to the remote classrooms and a closed campus. Class schedules are now available in Web Advisor. Advisement for online and graduate students will begin on Monday, March 30. Registration will begin for these two groups on Friday, April 3. Attached to this message is the updated schedule.
The Executive Deans, Dr. Eileen Jahn on Long Island ([email protected]) and Dr. Raymond D’Angelo in Brooklyn ([email protected]) and their academic teams are able to answer questions about classes and registration.
Transitioning to Online Learning
The College has established a website called “Carry On Teaching, Learning and Working” to provide the College community with resources to support faculty, students and staff to maintain continuity of teaching, learning and campus operations. We encourage you to visit this site frequently as additional resources continue to be added.
Communication with your instructors will be crucial for exploring alternatives for participating in their class. Be sure to look at your email frequently for communication from your instructor on how they are proceeding with class sessions. If you have not yet heard from them, contact them via SJC email. Coursework will be partially resuming the week of March 23.
Carry On Learning offers strategies, tips and advice for your learning experience and provides information about the top five things you may need to successfully participate in your courses:
● Clear communications
● Internet and device access
● Knowledge of Canvas
● Familiarity with cloud resources
● Commitment to spend time in your classes daily.
If your Instructor is using Canvas and you are not familiar with the platform, these resources will be helpful:
● Canvas Student Guide - Detailed help pages.
● Canvas Overview Video - Video about the Canvas Dashboard, Global Navigation links, and how to navigate a course.
● Getting Started - resources to help you become familiar with the basics of Canvas.
Support provides information on how to contact the ITS Help Desk and Canvas Support. If you have questions about your class meetings moving to an online format, or you do not have a suitable device or access to the internet to participate in your courses utilizing systems such as Canvas, Google Apps, etc. please reach out to your advisor or faculty member.
Finally, as President Boomgaarden noted in his earlier message to the College community, while these are trying times, we are a strong community blessed with the charisms of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
