Patchogue, NY December 17, 2009 St. Josephs College is pleased to announce the introduction of a new Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Religious Studies to its curriculum. Accredited in July 2009, the new major became available to students on the Long Island Campus in fall 2009.
The new B.A. in Philosophy and Religious Studies connects two ancient disciplines that continue to play vital roles in contemporary society. Philosophy has always encouraged and modeled a careful scrutiny of human experience and the extent of human knowledge while religious studies encourages us to examine the principles of religion and its influential force on our understanding of ourselves and our world.
"The new major in philosophy and religious studies represents an affirmation of our college's strong commitment to a liberal arts education, said Wendy Turgeon, associate professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy at St. Josephs College. "We are enthusiastic about offering our students the opportunity to explore systematically these fundamental areas of human experience.
Students pursuing a bachelors degree in philosophy and religious studies are required to complete 36 credits within the major, including nine credits concentrating on advanced instruction in either philosophy or religious studies, after which the student will write their specified senior thesis.
