SJC Faculty Expert Makes Strides for Healthcare

PATCHOGUE, NY MARCH 17, 2009 St. Josephs College is pleased to announce that John Sardelis, Dr.P.H., associate chair of health administration, has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Affinity Health Plan. In addition, Dr. Sardelis, along with a team of healthcare professionals from the Long Island Center for Health Care Policy, has secured a $550,000 grant from Governor David A. Paterson to improve the health and communities of Long Island.
The Affinity Health Plan is an independent, not-for-profit company dedicated to providing comprehensive, affordable, high-quality healthcare to New Yorkers that receive low to moderate income. In 2008, Dr. Sardelis was also elected to the board of IPRO, a not-for-profit corporation committed to assessing and improving health care services through the use of innovative methods and technologies.
The secured government grant will be dispersed over a period of two years to community healthcare systems, and a detailed assessment of the available care as well as a series of forums to discuss necessary programs and improvements to be carried out within the region will follow.
An assistant professor at St. Josephs College since 2003, Dr. Sardelis is founder of the St. Josephs College Healthcare Center for Outreach, Research, and Education (CORE), which assists Long Islanders in addressing health disparities, providing up-to-date information on public programs, and providing speakers on topical health issues. Dr. Sardelis received a bachelors degree in mathematics from Hunter College, University of the City of New York, a masters degree in statistics and operations research from New York University, Stern School of Business and a doctor of public health degree from Columbia University, Mailman School of Public Health, respectively.
