PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - DECEMBER 6, 2011 - St. Joseph's mens soccer player John Dettori finished tied for first in the goals per game category in the final NCAA Division III statistical rankings. The junior striker tied with Manhattanville Colleges Eros Olazabal with 1.3 goals per game during the 2011 season. He also finished in second place in points per game (2.95), total points (59) and total goals (26).
Dettori was named the 2011 Skyline Conference Player of the Year and won multiple ECAC Metro and Skyline Player of the Week awards this season. His totals for the year were jaw-dropping: 59 total points, 26 goals and seven assists. He posted a team-record five hat tricks and five game-winning goals. Dettori has been named to All-Skyline Conference Men's Soccer First Team in each of his three seasons.
A true student-athlete, Dettori has been named the Skyline Conference's Scholar-Athlete of the Year twice.
"It is very, very difficult to be the statistical champion in the NCAA for the entire country. John Dettori joins very elite company at SJC by winning the 2011 statistical scoring championship. While John has proven his ability to succeed on the soccer field, he has also brought more honors to SJC and to himself by twice being named Skyline Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2011 Skyline Conference Player of the Year," outgoing Head Coach Gary Smith said. "St. Joseph's College is very fortunate to have recruited an outstanding student-athlete like John Dettori."
St. Josephs mens soccer has had two other statistical champions in their history Tim Trava (points per game in 2004) and Chris Kunzig (assists per game in 2007). Trava was recently named the program's new head coach.
