SJC Long Island Celebrates Native American Heritage Month

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – November 2, 2015 – The Office of Multicultural Student Life at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is hosting two events in recognition of Native American Heritage Month. 

• Tuesday, November 17, 1–2 p.m.: Native American Dance and Storytelling will be hosted by Larry Yazzie, an international lecturer, educator and world champion fancy dancer. Raised on the Meskwaki Indian Settlement in Central Iowa, Yazzie began dancing at the age of seven and now tours the world educating people about the traditions of the Meskwaki Native American Tribe, their flamboyant and energetic fancy dance, and the Northern Plains style of singing. This event will take place in the McGann Conference Center of O’Connor Hall.
   
• Tuesday, November 24, 7 p.m.: “Cultural Fusion” is a show that celebrates an array of cultures through a variety of art forms. Join us for a wonderful journey around the world in The Muriel & Virginia Pless Center for Performing Arts of O’Connor Hall.

Native American Heritage Month is celebrated annually in November and celebrates rich and diverse cultures, traditions and histories, and acknowledges the important contributions of native people. The month of November is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise general awareness about the unique challenges native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.
