SJC Long Island to Host 2017 Long Island Youth Summit

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – St. Joseph’s College (SJC) will host the 2017 Long Island Youth Summit entitled “The Future of Long Island: Economy, Environment and Diversity” on Friday, April 7 from 8 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at SJC Long Island in Patchogue, New York.

The 2017 Long Island Youth Summit will invite more than 300 high school students to submit projects and visit SJC Long Island to discuss issues that are impacting Long Island. A keynote address will be given by Elaine Page, chief people innovation officer at Northwell Health, who will be discussing the issues of workforce preparedness and innovation that the next generation will need to bring with them to the workplace. An afternoon speech will be delivered by Town of Huntington Councilwoman Tracy A. Edwards who will address students on issues of diversity and civic engagement.

During the program, students will have the opportunity to participate in 11 timely workshops presented by professional experts including John Keating, manager of economic development and account services for PSEG Long Island; Gina Coletti, co-chair and co-founder of Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers; Eric Alexander, director of Vision Long Island and Judy Phagan, chair of the Department of English at SJC. Workshop topics include: Economic Development, Future Jobs and Housing; Diversity on Long Island; Teens and Substance Abuse; Teen Mental Health, Self Esteem and Well Being; Climate Change; Protection of Water; Bullying, Cyber-Bullying and Social Networking; and Renewable Energy.

Students from 21 Long Island school districts submitted artwork, videos, essays and research papers for the Summit. In the afternoon, student finalists will receive awards for their submitted projects.

The Long Island Youth Summit is a year-round, non-profit research program for high school students.  It is run as a public/private partnership between the Northwell Health, St. Joseph’s College, Vision Long Island, Citizen’s Campaign for the Environment, and public and private schools who participate in the Summit.
