SJC Presents Non-Violence Awards

BROOKLYN AND PATCHOGUE, NY MARCH 22, 2010 The Institute for the Study of Religion in Community Life, in conjunction with the Offices of the President and Provost at St. Josephs College, will present Fr. John Cervini, S. Jane Reilly, C.S.J., and S. Beatrice "Babs Barry, C.S.J. with its Esse Non Videri Non-Violence Award, in a ceremony on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at 12:40 p.m. in the McGann Conference Room on the Colleges Long Island Campus.

Named after the Colleges motto, "Esse Non Videri - To be, not to seem, the Non-Violence Award is presented annually to individuals who exemplify compassion, social engagement and spirituality in the pursuit of social justice and peace. Recipients are chosen for their commitment to a nonviolent way of life and efforts toward bringing about peace, perhaps in an individual or personal situation, or to the wider community or world. Past recipients include womens rights activist Homaira Mamoor, award-winning journalist Antoinette Bosco, peace activist Sister Mary Fritz, Woodrow Wilson Fellow and Middle East Scholar Janet Wallach and Dead Man Walking author Sister Helen Prejean.

"We are humbled to honor these fine human beings for their steadfast commitment to working for peace and justice, said Director of Campus Ministry Joseph Bruno.

Through dedicated ministry in the Dominican Republic, Fr. John, S. Jane and S. Babs have exemplified a life of service and commitment working with the poor and marginalized. Since 1979, S. Jane and S. Babs have been working with the Sisters of St. Joseph, in conjunction with the Diocese of Rockville Center, ministering to and with the poor on the border of Haiti. Fr. John joined the mission over 10 years ago. In 1986, S. Babs opened an inn for the sick and infirm, The Inn of the Good Samaritan, where the poor are given the opportunity to consult and receive treatment from qualified health care professionals.
