ST. JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY, NEW YORK EARNS ACCREDITATION FOR LONG ISLAND MSW PROGRAM

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – November 20, 2024 – St. Joseph’s University, New York (SJNY) is pleased to announce that the University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program has received its accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).  

CSWE accreditation is a rigorous peer-review process that assures recipients of social work services and students, faculty and staff of social work education programs, that the program has a clearly defined mission and objective that are achievable and consistent with expectations of social work practice. 

“Achieving accreditation as a Master of Social Work program represents not merely the culmination of rigorous effort but the beginning of a journey to empower future social workers, consistent with our mission of preparing future leaders for lives of purpose,” said Jo Anne Durovich, Ph.D., LMSW, associate professor of social work and director of MSW program. “This milestone affirms our program’s commitment to excellence, innovation and the highest standards of professional education, setting a foundation for transformative impact in the communities our graduates will serve.”

As the newest accredited program on Long Island, the program joins fellow CSWE-accredited programs that are held to higher standards of responsibility for educating students to be respectful and responsible social workers for diverse cultures and communities. 

St. Joseph’s MSW program was established in 2022. The inaugural class of MSW majors graduated in spring 2024 and graduates are now working in social work and related fields for employers such as local school districts, private practices, the juvenile justice system and in substance abuse treatment facilities. All of the graduates who have taken their licensure exams have passed and are now able to practice as licensed master social workers.

The MSW program prepares students to work in the field of professional social work as generalist and clinical practitioners with a commitment to social justice, diversity, and individual and community empowerment. The program provides students with flexible scheduling, including day, evening, weekend and online classes, and firsthand experience through two internships during their studies.

SJNY offers a 25 percent discount to MSW graduate students who are employed at a non-profit organization at the time of their initial enrollment. In addition, applicants who are eligible for admission into the program are automatically considered for an MSW scholarship based on a variety of factors, including academic accomplishments, relevant experience and availability of funds. No separate application is required and the current award amount is $4,000 per-semester. Discounts and scholarships for this program cannot be combined.
