Long Island M.A. in Special Education with an Annotation in Severe and Multiple Disabilities with Initial Certification

Prepare for initial certification. Become an effective educator. Get ready.

It’s never too late to change your career path and pursue your passion to teach and inspire children in a special education classroom — even if you’re not already certified. With an M.A. in Special Education from St. Joseph’s University, you will be well-prepared for initial certification in New York State Students with Disabilities (all grades), as well as receive a New York State Annotation for Severe and Multiple Disabilities (prekindergarten through grade 12).

Through a strong research component, students are exposed to the theory and practice of several distinct areas, including assessment, inclusion of family, psychological and social characteristics, and supports for students with physical impairments.

Prepare to be a highly effective special education teacher who serves students with mild, moderate and severe disabilities. Our program addresses the challenges of teachers in the field of special education, creates leaders, and upholds and advances the principles set forth by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).

Students in this 39-credit program will work with expert faculty who have a long and distinguished tradition of preparing teachers for success. With hybrid and online courses, this program provides working adults with the flexibility they need.

Get ready to recognize the dignity, freedom and inherent value of each student, as emphasized by the mission of St. Joseph’s University.
