Long Island Nursing, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Concentration

The need for well-prepared adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioners (AGPCNPs) is growing quickly.

With the current expansion of health services to previously uninsured adults, the demand for quality primary care services is increasing. It is estimated that approximately 11 million people signed up for coverage at the end of the first open enrollment period of the Affordable Care Act producing a rise in demand for primary care services and this trend is continuing.

St. Joseph’s University M.S. in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program responds to emerging national demographics and policies in healthcare.

In addition, the rising aging population and the declining numbers of primary care providers, has prompted concerns for who is going to provide primary care. With the population of approximately 10 million people (in our area) of which approximately 15 percent are over the age of 65, the need for adult gerontology primary care nurse practitioners is evident. To address this issue the role of the non-physician clinician, such as the nurse practitioner, needs to be enhanced by developing new educational and training programs which is the goal of this graduate program.

Program Overview

Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Graduate Program

This 39-credit MS Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP) program provides the theoretical and practical foundations for nurses to expand their scope of practice and to become leaders in their roles as advanced practice nurses. Graduates of the program will be prepared to deliver quality primary health care for adults across the age continuum: post-adolescent, adult, the older adult, and the frail elderly. The focus of this program is the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered primary care and offers both didactic and clinical experiences that prepare nurse practitioners to care holistically for diverse individuals and populations in the context of families, and communities.
