Are you intrigued by the minds of offenders? Do you want to learn about those who enforce the law? Do you want to prepare yourself for a 21st century career in public safety, law, research or advocacy? If so, SJNY's Criminal Justice program is the right fit for you.
Analyze the bigger picture in the world of criminal justice, from the policy makers to those who uphold the law. Students at our Long Island Campus explore why our criminal justice system operates the way it does. They closely examine the role of law enforcement agencies, courts, corrections and private agencies that aid in the prevention and control of crime.
Together with our student Criminal Justice Club, our department sponsors a wide variety of speakers, networking events and off-campus trips.
Some of our recent guests have included special agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration; members of the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office; probation officers from the U.S. District Courts; the vice president of the Fortune Society; and exonerees from the Innocence Project. Our students have made off-campus trips to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, as well as a 10-day trip to Germany as part of the University's Global Studies program.

Personalize Your Path: Our students specialize in an area of criminal justice related to their interest by selecting a minor. This flexible design allows for a diverse array of options that include legal studies, forensic psychology, cyber security, administration of justice (organization leadership) and juvenile justice, among many others.
Hone Your Skills: In their senior year, each student completes an internship, where they have the opportunity to apply and further their learning in workplace settings such as public service organizations, law enforcement agencies, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office and other government agencies.
Prepare for a Number of Professions: Alumni of SJNY's criminal justice program have held a variety of positions, including as practicing attorneys, law enforcement officers, advocacy and policy experts, social service workers and informational security analysts.
Our dynamic, multidisciplinary Criminal Justice program immerses students in a wide range of fields, including political science, constitutional law, criminal procedure, psychology, forensic bioscience, and criminology. At St. Joseph’s University, the Criminal Justice Department also offers specialized courses in cutting-edge topics like cybersecurity, crime analysis and policy, and criminalistics. Graduates of the program emerge with strong critical thinking skills, a broad global perspective, and the adaptability to excel in careers related to public safety, law, research and advocacy, as well as the ability to pursue advanced studies in graduate school.

The dynamic, multidisciplinary criminal justice degree at St. Joseph’s engages students in a number of areas, including sociology, political science, psychology, philosophy, forensic bioscience and criminal justice. Unlike other programs, the degree focuses more on evidence-based practices known to be effective in the field, criminal justice policy analysis to assess alternative responses to crime and quantitative applications — all of which are essential skills for the advancing professional. Our criminal justice majors can explore careers as law enforcement officers, correction officers, social workers, counselors, investigators, and probation and parole officers. Some study law and become prosecutors and defense attorneys.

Our undergraduate students choose a minor to specialize and hone their skills for the challenges of criminal justice in the 21st century.
Moreover, every senior completes a semester-long internship that allows them to apply classroom theories and procedures in an array of settings, including law firms, research organizations, the New York City Police Department, the Suffolk County’s District Attorney's Office, the U.S. Attorney's Office, New York City's Department of Corrections and other government agencies. We also offer extensive experiential learning and study abroad opportunities.
