Computer Information Technology Major
The CIT program prepares students to apply information technology in organizational and business environments. Students learn to develop technological infrastructures and systems and use them to acquire and manage information. The program builds on programming, algorithms, data structures, databases, software engineering, business systems and computer networking fundamentals.
Computer Science Major
Our B.S. in Computer Science graduates can be found working as computer programmers, animation and computer graphics specialists, Web designers and security analysts. Our curriculum is based on the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the premier organization for computer professionals. We combine a strong theoretical foundation with a focus on practical applications and our students are well prepared to enter the workforce upon graduation.
Computer Science Teacher Certification Major
Explore your passion for computing, and prepare to help future generations become digitally fluent. This program provides the skills necessary to become a teacher of computer science and computing technology in grades K-12.
Mathematics Major
Mathematics is the near-perfect major. It provides the student with a deep, profound education and, simultaneously, with the tools to succeed in many a career. The reason is that the backbone of mathematics is pure deductive reasoning. This is a tool of near universal utility.
Majoring in mathematics is, thus, an excellent choice. Doing so at St. Joseph's University is a wise choice, as well. Small class sizes and extensive use of pedagogical technology characterize the environment; intellectual exploration characterize the experience.
Mathematics Secondary Education Major
St. Joseph's University Mathematics/Secondary Education program is well respected in school districts for the quality of our graduates. Upon graduation, our students have been offered teaching positions in local public and private schools as well as school districts throughout the United States. Our alumni have also been accepted into the prestigious Math for America and Teach for America programs. Mathematics/Secondary education majors are eligible in their Junior year to apply for the National Science Foundation ‘s Robert Noyce Scholarship which is awarded annually for up to $15,000. Students can also choose to pursue our 5-year dual degree program which offers students the ability to complete their bachelor’s and master’s degree in 5 years.
Mathematics B.A./B.S. and M.A Five-Year Program
The five-year program in Mathematics Education allows students to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in just five years. Students will also save money by allowing 9 credits to count towards both degrees. Applications will be accepted in the second semester of students’ junior year, with graduate courses taken senior year. Applicants must have a minimum 3.3 GPA in mathematics courses. Student can earn their initial teaching certification after completing 120 credits and all of the requirements for the bachelor’s degree in mathematics with adolescence education. At this point students are eligible to look for a full-time teaching position. The master’s degree can then be completed in one summer and one additional academic year. In the fifth year students are considered half-time students. All of the graduate courses are in the evening, which leaves students free during the day for employment. One additional benefit of the five-year program is that all students are exempt from taking the GRE.
Mathematics, Actuary Science Strand
This strand, consisting of two additional mathematics courses and several courses from other departments, has been attached to the Mathematics Major in order to help prepare students for prospective careers in the actuarial field. Computer Information Technology Minor
Students interested in gaining knowledge about computers, specifically, information technology, may pursue a computer information technology minor to add value to their degree program.
Computer Science Minor
Students interested in expanding their computer science knowledge may pursue a computer science minor to add value to their degree program.
The computer science minor can be attached to any St. Joseph's University major that will accommodate it and can be completed in the traditional four years of study.
The program consists of six courses, in which a minimum average of C must be attained.
Mathematics Minor
The mathematics minor consists of six courses in which an average of C must be attained. MAT 205 and MAT 206 are required. Electives may be any course at or above MAT 203 and must include at least one course at or above the 300 level. In addition COM 152 may be offered as an elective towards the minor.

SJNY computer science students with strong academic records are guaranteed enrollment in Hofstra University’s masters of computer science program. Save money by having 6 credits completed at St. Joseph’s count towards both degrees. Earn your masters degree in one additional year (24 credits) at Hofstra University.
